Disclaimer: This story, Right Where We Belong, is completely fictional and has absolutely NOTHING to do with anything that may or may not go on in Chester Bennington's, or any other member of Linkin Park's lives.
Sasha's hands were shaking, as she tried to mount one of the lights above the stage.
She had never been nervous on the job before, but today she was a wreck. Her coworkers were making a little fun of her because Sasha was normally a very professional lighting technician, but today she had been running in circles and babling to herself, since the boss had confirmed who were to play in the club that night.
Sasha lived in Denmark and the club she worked at was a small one where, usually, new and fairly unknown bands would perform.
She had a passion for music and the job at the club was a perfect one, because it enabled her to listen to a lot of new music.
Her favorite band, however, was not unknown nor was it new. It was the band Linkin Park and Sasha had been a fan for years.
For some reason, she had never been to one of their concerts during those years. She had either lacked money or had no one to go with.
She was a member of their fanclub, however, and had been for several years.
She had checked their fanclub website and seen that they were to perform in Denmark. But when she saw the name of the venue they were to play at, she had almost fainted. It was the name of the club she was working at!
She had called her boss right away, asking him if it was true.
"Yeah, Sasha it is true. They decided to take the show to a smaller venue to connect with their fans. I figured you would be perfect to do the lighting for them. This way you can meet them and watch the show."
Sasha had done as much of the lighting as she could, in advance. Now it was up to the band to tell her exactly what they wanted.
Her stomach were filling up with butterflies, as she heard Chester's voice outside the club.
"Oh, this is a cute club. It's been a long time, since we've played a cute place like this, eh Mike?" She heard him say.
When she saw the band enter the club, Sasha had to remind herself to breathe. She had had a fan-girl crush on Chester Bennington, for a long time, and she was not quite sure how to handle it all. What would she say to him? Would she become completely starstruck and go all silent? Or would she be so nervous that she would just ramble like a maniac, which she would tend to do, when she was extremely nervous?
And what would the bandmembers be like? What if her heroes were complete not a very nice persons?!
She tried to calm down, by reminding herself that she was at work and this was just another band that she would help out with the lighting. It didn't help much, though.
They were not complete not a very nice persons, thank God. They were so nice and chatty, and when she went up to Chester and said hi, those brown, almost black, eyes pierced hers and it felt like he was looking right through her and could read her like an open book.
They talked a little about the lighting of the stage during the different songs and she felt very lucky to be able to do this for her favorite band.
They joked around in their usual dorky-and-random-yet-extremely-funny way, but they were still very professional about their music and the lighting were done fairly quick.
She went to get a soda at the bar and Chester came up to her and started talking.
As he was rambling about the tour, Sasha found herself thinking 'I'm actually having a conversation with Chester Bennington of Linkin Park!' and she forgot to breathe for a second, becoming a little dizzy.
Chester looked at her "Are you okay?" He asked.
"Huh? Oh. Yeah, I'm fine...I think I just forgot to breathe for a second there and got a little dizzy. I'm sorry, it's just that I'm a huge fan and I'm, honestly, a little starstruck here." Sasha replied, wanting to beat herself for not acting more professional around him.
Chester just chuckled a little and said "Yeah, fans tend to get like that. At least until they see that we're not that different from them. We're just regular guys, who happens to be fortunate enough to be able to make music. Just take a deep breath and calm down."
Sasha tried and it actually helped a little.
They continued talking and for some reason they started talking about tattoos, which Chester was very passionate about.
Sasha showed him her latest LP tattoo. Told him that she would not show him the first LP tattoo, as she wouldn't take off her pants right there.
Chester chuckled and joked about how boring Sasha was because of that.
Chester was married to his second wife, so Sasha never thought about him in the sense that she would actually ever have a chance with him. It was a fan-girl crush and nothing more and this did not change, because she was doing the lighting for the show.
At this point, Chester had to go get ready for the show and left Sasha at the bar.
The club filled up fast and the fans had the most amazing energy, Sasha had ever felt.
She went up to her control panel and got ready to start the show.
When the band entered the stage, she almost fainted because she forgot to breathe. They looked amazing and so energetic.
When Chester sang 'The Little Things Give You Away' and 'Leave Out All The Rest' she had tears coming down her face because it was so beautiful and he was putting such emotion into singing it. She was not surprised, though. She had expected it to be a very special show, both concerning the energy and the emotion and it certainly was.
After the show, the band had a little signing thing for the fans and Sasha got in line, too. She wanted their signatures, but would not take advantage of her job for it.
They all looked a little surprised, when they saw her but neither of them commented on it. They treated her like any fan and she felt good about that.
Chester did, however, whisper to her that he wanted to talk to her when the signing was over.
Sasha was a little surprised and worried that he was unhappy about some of the lighting.
She went to the bar to wait, and when the last fan had left the club, Chester called for her.
"I want to see that other tattoo, you've got." He said.
Sasha was releived that he was not unhappy with the lighting but also surprised that he wanted to see her tattoo.
They went into the office of the club, so she could show him her tattoos. She was still a little starstruck and did not quite know what to say to him. Chester, however, being used to talk to starstruck fans, started talking about her job and got her to tell him about it, which calmed her down a little.
She started by showing him her tattoos on her ankles, wrists and upper arm, but was reluctant to show him the one on her thigh. He may be her big idol, but he was still a stranger and a guy and she did not want to just take off her pants in front of him.
Chester found a blanket, she could wrap around her and assured her that he would have his back turned, until she said that she was ready. This way, she could just pull the blanket aside and show him only the tattoo.
Sasha did feel a little like a prude, but she thought Chester was nice to respect her like this, so she grabbed the blanket, made him turn around and took off her pants. Then she wrapped the blanket around her waist, pulled the blanket aside so only the tattoo was showing, and told Chester that he could turn around.
The tattoo went across her thigh. It had the LP symbol at the end and said 'I take everything from the inside and throw it all away'. It was a line from one of their songs that Sasha had always felt drawn to.
Chester looked at it and went "Very cool. Why did you choose those words?" Sasha was a little amazed that he actually cared enough to ask, but said "Well, because I think they're cool words to live by. Or...to try and live by. I mean, we should all try and take everything from the inside and throw it away, instead of holding grudges and stuff."
Chester nodded, while still looking at the tattoo and Sasha thought that he was going to stare at her thigh forever, which made her very uncomfortable, so she pulled the blanket around her.
He looked up. "Oh, I'm sorry. I guess I was staring. Didn't mean to..but I think you're right that most people should try and live by those words a little more".
They continued talking about most everything under the sun for a few hours, before the band had to get ready to leave for the next venue.
Chester asked for her number, which she gave him, thinking that he would never call because....well, why would he?
He had probably just asked for her number to make her feel special.
To her surprise, Mike called the next day. He said that he had found her number in Chester's bunk and had decided to call and say that she should not expect Chester to actually call back.
Sasha laughed at him "I'm not a complete idiot, Mike. I never expected him to call me because...I don't see why he would".
Sasha was getting the feeling that Mike was like the annoying mother of the band. Especially towards Chester.
About an hour after her talk with Mike, Chester called. Sasha was completely surprised and almost stopped breathing when he asked her to continue the tour with them.
Her? On tour with Linkin Park? On a bus with six or more guys?
Sasha was completely overwhelmed and didn't quite know what kind of brainfart Chester was having, asking her this.
Chester explained that they could use someone with her skills, as a lighting technician and that he was actually offering her a job.
She told Chester that she would have to think about it for a while and that she would call him back. After a few hours of pondering what this would mean and, as the fan that she was, how cool it would be, Sasha figured 'when opportunity knocks, you better answer' and called Chester back, telling him that she would love to go on tour with them.
He told her that there was a ticket waiting for her at the airport, so she could meet up with them in Germany.
Sasha was completely flustered and went "Look, Chester...I would love to come work for you guys, but I already have a job that I like and I can't just pick up an leave within hours. I will have to talk to my boss and explain everything, so let me do that and call you back to tell you when he will let me go."
Reluctantly, Chester agreed.
Sasha went to talk to her boss a few hours after that, explaining what a great opportunity she had just gotten.
He was, of course, not happy about losing Sasha, but on the other hand he did see what a great chance this was for her, so he told her that she would be free by the end of the week. He would need to put up an add, so he could not just let her go right away, as much as he wanted to.
Sasha called Chester and told him how it would go and Chester said "Okay, then you'll have to meet up with us in France. I'll have someone call the airport in Copenhagen and change your flight and then I'll call back with the information you need. I'll meet you at the airport, when you land."
When they met up with the rest of the band, the only one who wasn't positive, was Mike.
He greeted Sasha, but she could clearly see that he was not thrilled with Chester's decision about bringing her with them, which surprised her because she was there to work and not really hang out with them.
She asked Chester about it and he said that he hadn't really told Mike why he had asked her to come with them. Sasha thought that was the most stupid thing she had ever heard and said "Look Chester. Isn't Mike a part of this band too? I mean, doesn't he...and the rest of the guys in the band, for that matter...have a say in who gets hired and who doesn't?"
Chester looked at her with a I'm-your-d**n-boss-woman!-look, turned around and walked away.
Sasha went up to Mike and told him that she was there to work with the lighting and that was it. Mike looked relieved and said "Ah okay. Well, Chester has this idea of bringing random people with us on tour and he hardly ever tells the rest of us about it, until it's too late so that's why I was a little freaked out. I thought you were a fan, who was here to try and hook up with Chester or something. I'm sorry."
Sasha laughed and said "Well, I am a fan and I do have a crush on Chester, as most female fans...but that has nothing to do with why I'm here and I know Chester is married, so don't worry about that, okay?"
Mike breathed a sigh of relief. "Okay, I won't then." He said.
Sasha worked with the rest of the crew, while they were on the road. She lived in the crew-bus, when that was necessary and got her own room, or shared with some of the other few women, when they stayed at hotels.
She, obviously, worked with the band, as well, during soundchecks and whatnot and found that they were all really nice and very normal guys. None of them had any star-like ideas to speak of and they were usually joking around with the crew, while still remaining serious about their work.
Although she rarely hung out with the band, she always felt like the ones she could easiest talk to, were Mike and Chester.
After being on the road with them for about a month, Sasha got home-sick. Very home-sick. It was not that she did not like being on tour because she really enjoyed the whole experience of it and it made her feel good to really be able to use her skills as a lighting technician.
But she just missed her house, her friends, her parents and her old life in general.
She tried to keep it to herself, but one day where the band was setting up for soundcheck and she was trying to get the right light to work, but couldn't, Chester lost his temper with her.
"What the f**k?! Get the d**n light to work already! It can't be that f**king hard! It's what you do for a living for crying out loud! What the f**k is wrong with that spot right there?!"
Sasha did not say anything, despite the fact that she could, normally, give Chester a run for his money, when he got like this. She just ran out of the venue, crying her eyes out.
She went to hide in the bus, but after a few minutes she heard that someone entered it.
"Sasha?" Chester said. She did not want to speak to him right now because she was embarrassed over her reaction and she was angry with him, too.
"Go away, Chester. I'm not in the mood for your crap right now."
"I can see that," he said "but I..and the rest of the guys..were just wondering what the hell happened in there? I know, I went overboard and I'm sorry. But I've not seen that reaction from you before. Usually, you tell me to get the f**k over myself and let you do your job. What's going on?"
"I don't know. I think, I'm just a little overwhelmed with the whole thing. And I think I'm home-sick. I miss my house, my family, my friends and my old life. I didn't expect this. I mean, it's such a great opportunity for me to be working with you guys and...well, it pays really well, too...but I think it's just because I'm not used to a) working this hard for such a long period of time and b) having so many people around me all the time. I don't know. I'm just a little f**ked up right now." Sasha was trying to seem calmer than she really was, because she really just wanted Chester to leave her alone.
"Oh Sasha." He said, as he sat down beside her and put his arm around her shoulders. She actually felt her heart skip a beat and the hairs in her neck stand up, but she pushed it aside and figured it was just because he had done it so unexpectedly.
"We all get that. Especially when we start a tour. The first month is a nightmare for all of us. Most of us deal with it, by calling our friends and families until they tell us that they actually have lives to take care of. It passes and you get used to the whole thing, after a while. But you just have to remember to stay in touch with your loved ones on a regular basis, so it doesn't get this bad." He explained.
They talked about it for a while, and Sasha felt that she had gotten to know a different side of Chester. He was actually a very emotional guy and really, really sweet. He understood her and had told her to come talk to him, if she ever felt the need to. He would always listen.
She knew, of course that he was not there to be her shrink-wannabe or anything...that he was actually at work here, but it was nice to know that she could go to him, if the nuts hit the fan, so to speak.
As it turned out, Sasha actually felt better after a few days, where she had called her friends and family. She talked more and more with Chester, getting to know him and his background and their arguements during soundchecks became fewer and fewer.
In fact, Sasha found herself to grow more and more fond of Chester, as they spent more time together when he was not working. She was afraid that she was falling in love with him, which was an impossible idea because he was married. She could not be falling in love with a married man.
She had always said that crushes were fine...even on married men, but this was just a little more than a crush.
Obviously, she never told anyone in the crew about this because she had made herself a promise that she would never be 'the other woman'. She talked to her best friend about it, who was all excited and told her to just go for it. Her friend was a fan of Chester's and was a little caught up in the whole thing about it being Chester-of-Linkin-Park instead of just Chester, as Sasha saw him. She was still a big fan of the music, but she had gotten over the thing about being star-struck, and mainly saw Chester and the band as employers and friends, rather than stars.
One day something happened, though.
Sasha's hands were shaking, as she tried to mount one of the lights above the stage.
She had never been nervous on the job before, but today she was a wreck.
